“When I was allowed to re-audition, it was when he was out of the picture,” Chris said of he and his brother never directly vying for the MCU role at the same time
Chris Hemsworth wasn’t the only Hemsworth in contention to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In a new TikTok video from Vanity Fair, the Marvel superstar, 40, revealed that he and his younger brother, Liam Hemsworth, were both considered for the role of Thor in the 2011 film of the same name.
Chris portrayed the “God of Thunder” and Avenger from 2011 through 2022. He starred alongside Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow and Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye.
The Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga confirmed during a lie detector test for the publication that Liam, 34, also auditioned for the role. However, he wasn’t worried his brother would get the part.
“I was told I didn’t have the part at that point. So I was excited for him, a little jealous maybe but I was excited for him,” explained Chris. “Then when I was allowed to re-audition, it was when he was out of the picture.”
“So we never were neck and neck,” clarified Chris. “It was either I was involved, then wasn’t, then he was involved, then wasn’t, then I was involved.”
As the lie detector test continued, Chris was asked if there’s ever been a role of his brother’s he wanted to score for himself.
“No, no,” Chris assured the interviewer. But the interviewer quickly added, “Not even The Last Song?”
This led the actor to laugh. “The Last Song? [Laughs] No,” Chris said. “His life would be very different wouldn’t it?”
The polygraph examiner then reported that his response was “inconclusive,” leading him to confirm that he did not want to be in the 2010 romantic drama.
The Last Song follows Liam’s William, who slowly falls in love with Miley Cyrus’ Ronnie, a young musician from New York City visiting her estranged father for the summer. Throughout their summer together, the two teenagers grapple with their stark differences, contrasting upbringings, and their relationships with their families.
During the film’s production, Cyrus, 31, and Liam met. They dated and later married in 2018. The following year, the couple announced their separation and divorced in 2020.
