‘There will be no Afrobeats without D’banj and Don Jazzy’ – Tee Billz
Tunji Ibrahim Balogun, popularly known as Tee Billz, says the global buzz around Afrobeats should be credited to singer D’banj and producer Don Jazzy.
According to the estranged husband and manager of Tiwa Savage, the music genre would have amounted to nothing without the duo who he called “KINGS”.
Reacting to a video of D’banj’s electrifying performance at the Afro Nation Festival in Portugal on Friday, August 2, Tee Billz intimated that Don Jazzy and D’banj deserved accolades for their impact.
“It’s funny how everyone is shouting AfroBeats to the world now and conversations are being held around the world without acknowledgment,” Tee Billz captioned the clip that saw a Ghanaian lady flashing her panties while twerking on stage.
“Without the KINGS Dbanj and Don Jazzy there will be no Afrobeats blessings to you guys.
Don Jazzy and D’banj owned a music label Mo’Hits Records Limited founded in 2006. Don Jazzy was the CEO and D’banj was the Co-Owner of the label, which specialised in Afrobeats.
Distinct from Afrobeat is Afrobeats – a sound originating in Nigeria in the 21st century – which takes in diverse influences and is an eclectic combination of rap, dancehall, and even R&B. The two genres, though often conflated, are not the same.
In March 2012, Don Jazzy confirmed on social media that D’banj had left the group citing difference in interests as the reason.
Don Jazzy went on to establish another record label known as Mavin Records on 8 May 2012.
The Afro Nation, Europe’s biggest urban music beach festival, taking place from 1-4 August on the stunning Praia da Rocha, brings together some of the most exciting names in Afrobeats, hip hop, R&B, dancehall and bashment.
The headliners are a trio of Nigerian stars in Wizkid, Davido and Burna Boy.
Also appearing on the line-up are Femi Kuti, Falz, Teni, Buju Banton, Stonebwoy, Adekunle Gold, Yemi Alade, Stefflon Don and many more, with DJs Charlie Sloth, Steel Banglez and Tim Westwood confirmed to play.
