Selena Gomez fans believe The Weeknd wrote ‘The Idol’ based loosely on her life

The Weeknd’s series, The Idol, which is co-created by Euphoria’s Sam Levinson has received plenty of criticism for its explicit content.

However, some fans claim that the show may be loosely inspired by the Selena Gomez’s life, given some uncanny similarities from the show to her real life.

Gomez previously dated The Weeknd, also known as Abel Tesfaye, for 10 months back in 2017. While dating, the couple enjoyed an international romance, traveling around the world together for the R&B singer’s Starboy: Legend of the Fall tour.

Now, fans have drawn comparisons that Lily-Rose Depp’s character, Jocelyn, is similar to that of the Calm Down singer, 30.

A piece in BuzzFeed points out some uncanny resemblances that many have noticed.

The first comparison is that Depp’s character, Joss, and Gomez are pop stars who started as kid actors on a hit children’s show.

The show follows the story of Joss and how she is planning a comeback after she cancelled her tour amid her mother’s passing, and she plans to make a comeback throughout the series.

Gomez also cancelled her Revival tour for mental health reasons. She made her comeback with an original song, Bad Liar.

We then see Jocelyn posing for the cover art of her new single. In the photoshoot, Jocelyn wears little apart from a hospital bracelet she was given in rehab. There is debate about the bracelet but one of her team says ‘mental illness is sexy.’

Fans drew comparisons between the scene and Gomez’ Bad Liar photoshoot, in which she wears a hospital band, having just received treatment for her lupus.

Given that Selena was dating The Weeknd at the same time as the Bad Liar photoshoot, fans are speculating that he may have used her experiences to influence aspects of Jocelyn’s character.
