“I like to give something that’s unexpected,” SJP told Cosmo during her holiday soirée event with Amazon in New York City earlier this month. “I really think about what is going to communicate or convey my affection for this person and doesn’t feel like it was thought of at the last minute.”

Cosmo sat down with the actor and producer to chat through her go-to Amazon presents, plus her best fashion advice for holiday parties and plans for her own Christmas celebrations. With Sarah and her husband, Matthew Broderick, overseas in January for the London leg of their play Plaza Suite and their son off studying at Brown University, Sarah is excited to spend quality time with family.

“We do have traditions and I learned a lot of them from my mom,” Sarah said. “Growing up, we always put the empty rolls of wrapping paper under a tree and they’re called ‘doot-de-doos’ and they mean Santa was there—weird things like that!”

As an avid reader, some of SJP’s favorite gifts to receive are books. “I spend a lot of time trying to get rid of things and I don’t want to be the person that’s added to that,” she told Cosmo of her gift-finding strategy. “So I try to think of things that have been special to me, or surprising.”
