Rapper Yungen Gunnin Convicted of Murder, Shot a Man While Performing
Mississippi rapper Yungen Gunnin was convicted of second-degree murder and felony possession of a weapon last week after a shooting that took place in December 2018.
Yungen Gunnin, whose real name is Jordan Johnson, was arrested on December 15, 2018, for the murder of 23-year-old Da’John Mitchell. The rapper was performing at a Louisiana nightclub when the prosecution claims he shot Mitchell.
During Yungen Gunnin’s performance at Suga Shak, Mitchell allegedly bumped into a member of the rapper’s crew and caused a shootout. Yungen Gunnin reportedly drew a .380 pistol and shot Mitchell in the back and four more times after the victim fell to the floor.
“It was a senseless crime,” said District Attorney Brad Burget. “Either because Mr. Mitchell bumped Johnson or because of Mr. Johnson’s vanity he decided to shoot. There is no justification to take someone’s life over purported or perceived insults.”
The 23-year-old artist was arrested hours later at his Mississippi apartment after law enforcement spotted his rental car driving across the Mississippi River Bridge. Yungen Gunnin previously pleaded guilty to three counts of aggravated assault for his role in a 2014 shooting and was released on probation months before the shooting.
