Offset is not actually related to his fellow former Migos members Quavo or TakeOff, despite many fans believing it so since the group’s inception.
The Atlanta rhymer sat down for an in-depth cover story for Variety that was published on Wednesday (May 24), and while he didn’t discuss Migos much due to his ongoing legal battle with Quality Control, a small note about his lack of biological relation to the group has left fans’ heads spinning.
“He was classmates with Quavo — the third member of Migos — and began hanging out with him and TakeOff when Offset was in the sixth grade,” the article reads. “While Quavo was TakeOff’s uncle, the two were just three years apart in age, and although Offset is often referred to as Quavo’s cousin, they are actually not biologically related.”
In response, one fan tweeted: “so, damn near a decade of folks writing about migos all being family was … not true? at least the offset/quavo cousin aspect mind you — and nobody corrected it?” To which someone replied with: “I swear I used to use that as concrete evidence for everything from their chemistry and why they lasted so long.”
The interview came as part of the promotional run for his forthcoming solo effort, which he revealed will feature Cardi B, Future, the late TakeOff, Latto, Travis Scott and Chloë Bailey.
After previewing a range of tracks off the tape, Offset then asked the reporter: “You wanna hear my last song with TakeOff?”
According to the piece, Set appeared joyful as he listened to the last track the pair recorded together prior to TakeOff’s murder in Houston last year, and said this new album will be a full-fledged attempt to branch away from his Migos shadow.
“This is me going full-fledged into my solo career,” he said. “The objective is to do it fully and smash shit and fuck the game up as a solo artist. I’m coming through, bustin’ through the door. It’s all set, my next chapter. It’s my time.”
While he couldn’t confirm a release date, Offset said that his album is slated for release via Universal’s Capitol Music Group this summer with a tour on the horizon.
