NBA Investigating Allegations That Thunder’s Josh Giddey Had a Relationship with a Minor: Reports
The NBA is currently investigating allegations that Josh Giddey of the Oklahoma City Thunder had a relationship with a minor, a league spokesperson confirmed to multiple outlets.
NBA spokesperson Mike Bass confirmed to The Athletic, which was first to report the news, that the league is looking into the allegations made against Giddey, 21, that initially surfaced on social media.
NBC News also reported on the investigation, noting that Bass “offered no further information” when reached for comment.
Both the NBA and Oklahoma City Thunder did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment on Saturday.
According to the Associated Press, an anonymous social media user — who has since deactivated their account — alleged that Giddey was pictured with a high school junior in photos and videos.
Both Giddey and Thunder coach Mark Daigneault declined to comment to reporters during a Friday practice.
“I understand the question, obviously, but there’s no further comment right now,” Giddey told reporters.
“I get the question guys, I completely understand you guys want to know about it but just for right now, I don’t have anything to say,” he added after being asked again.
Daigneault, who was asked if he thought Giddey could be “a potential distraction,” noted that it was a “personal matter.”
“And I have no comment on it,” he said. “And that will be my answer on anything related.”
Giddey, who was raised in Melbourne, Australia, was selected sixth overall in the 2021 NBA Draft by the Thunder. He’s currently averaging 12.3 points, 5.7 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game, as his team’s record sits at 11-4.
Thunder’s next match-up is at home Saturday at 5 p.m. against the Philadelphia 76ers.
