Minneapolis Church Shooting: 2 Children Dead, 17 Injured in Tragic Attack During Prayer
Minneapolis church shooting – church mass shooting – Minneapolis tragedy – Two children are dead and 17 others were wounded after a gunman opened fire inside a Catholic church in Minneapolis on Wednesday, Aug. 27, police confirmed at a press conference.
At a news briefing on Wednesday afternoon, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said the “unthinkable tragedy” at Annunciation Catholic School was reported to police just before 8:30 a.m. and happened during a mass service at the church where dozens of children were in attendance for the first week of school.
The chief said that two children, ages 8 and 10, were killed while sitting in the pews when a gunman fired a rifle through the windows from outside. According to O’Hara, 14 of the 17 people injured in the shooting were children, two of whom are in critical condition.
Thomas Wyatt, chair of emergency medicine at Hennepin Healthcare, said at a separate press conference that 11 patients were admitted, including 9 children, and 7 were in critical condition. The children were between the ages of 6 and 14, Wyatt said.
Police said the suspect fired three weapons during the shooting: a rifle, a shotgun and a pistol. They believe the suspect, thought to be in his early 20s, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound and have not shared a motive. O’Hara couldn’t confirm whether the suspect was a former student or employee at the school and added that investigators are searching the vehicle believed to have been used by the shooter.
Mayor Jacob Frey also spoke at the press conference, saying “You cannot put into words the gravity, tragedy, or pain of this situation.”
“Don’t just say it’s about thoughts and prayers, these kids were literally praying,” Frey added. “These are kids who should be learning with their friends, they should be playing on the playground, they should be able to go to school or church in peace.”
Gov. Tim Walz earlier said on X that he had been briefed on the shooting and that law enforcement had responded to the scene.
“I’m praying for our kids and teachers whose first week of school was marred by this horrific act of violence,” Walz added.
