Jacob Gooch Sr. was shot in the ankle, while his wife was hit in the calf and his son in the foot
A man who survived getting shot at the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl parade Wednesday described hearing an altercation before gunfire rang out as the event concluded.
Jacob Gooch Sr., who was at the parade with his wife and children, was interviewed on CBS Mornings Thursday and spoke about his harrowing experience at what was supposed to be a celebratory event that devolved into chaos.
“I heard the altercation … a girl who said like, ‘Don’t do it, not here, this is stupid,’ or something like that,” Gooch told CBS’ Gayle King. “And then the gunshots, which at the time I thought were fireworks.”
One woman was killed in the shooting on the west side of the city’s iconic Union Station, while 22 others, including Gooch, his wife and his son, were injured, police chief Stacey Graves said Wednesday at a press conference.
Gooch said his daughter described seeing a woman holding back a man who then pulled out a gun and started spinning in a circle while shooting.
“It’s just a bunch of happy people, nothing’s going to happen,” Gooch said of his thoughts before going to the parade.
Graves told reporters Wednesday that a motive for the shooting is not yet known.
Loud pops rang out as soon as the confetti began falling as the players left the stage, according to a PEOPLE reporter on the ground at the parade. Witnesses at the scene said they saw multiple people bleeding, although it was not clear what the source of their injuries was.
Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas said Wednesday that all Chiefs players were accounted for.
Lisa Lopez-Galvan, a mother of two, was identified as the woman killed in the shooting. Lopez-Galvan was a radio DJ for KKFI 90.1 FM, which confirmed that she had been killed.
“It is with sincere sadness and an extremely heavy and broken heart that we let our community know that KKFI DJ Lisa Lopez, host of Taste of Tejano lost her life today in the shooting at the KC Chiefs’ rally,” the station said in a statement.
The Kansas City Star reported that she died during surgery after being shot in the abdomen.
