Make Dotse next CJ after Akuffo’s retirement this year – Professor Kwaku Asare

A justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana, Justice Jones Dotse should be made the next Chief Justice after the retirement of Justice Sophia Akuffo later this year, Professor Kwaku Asare, a US-based Ghanaian Professor, has said.

Ms. Akuffo who is due for retirement this year was appointed as Chief Justice on 11 May 2017 by President Nana Akufo-Addo.

She was sworn in by President Akufo-Addo on 19 June 2017 as the thirteenth Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana.

She replaced Chief Justice Theodora Georgina Wood who was also appointed by former President John Agyekum Kufuor.

Commenting on her impending retirement in a Facebook post, Prof Asare who is also a legal practitioner said: “With Chief Justice Akuffo due to retire, I think Justice Dotse will be an outstanding replacement. I also think Judge Anthony Kojo Yeboah needs to be elevated to the Supreme Court.”

Jones Victor Mawulorm Dotse is a Supreme Court judge of the Republic of Ghana and also of The Gambia.

He worked as a State Attorney with the Attorney-General’s Department from 1979 to 1981. After this stint, he went into private practice.

He served as the President of the Volta Region Bar of the Ghana Bar Association. He became a high court judge in June 2002 and became a judge in the Court of Appeal in September 2003.

He was sworn in as a Justice of the Supreme Court of the Gambia in February 2008 and in June of that same year became a Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana.

He has attended courses and seminars in the United States, Canada, Nigeria, Liberia and Ghana.

He also served as the Chairman of the Governing Board of the Judicial Training Institute in Accra. Jones Dotse is the Chairman of the University Council at the University of Health and Allied Sciences in Ho.
