Age is just a number when it comes to Laura Dern and Taylor Swift’s friendship. Despite the 22-year age difference, the Oscar-winning actress still considers the pop star one of her closest friends.
During a new interview with People, Dern — who made a cameo as Swift’s evil stepmother in her “Bejeweled” music video in 2022 — opened up about her “deep friendship” with the singer at the premiere of her new film Common Ground in Beverly Hills on Thursday. “It’s one of my deep friendships and I love and admire her so much,” Dern told the outlet, adding: “To find a friend amidst the creative, and she’s a superpower. She’s incredible. So that’s been really fun.”
When asked if she’s grown her fanbase amongst Swifties, Dern replied, “I don’t know. I don’t know, but I’ll take it.”
Back in October 2022, Taylor revealed how she got Laura on board with her role in the music video, which she described as “a twist on a Cinderella story.” While making an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, she told the host that she wrote the actress a one-page script, telling Dern she would get to call her a “tired, tacky wench.”
“I was like, ‘Oscar-winner Laura Dern, hello. I’ve written a script,” recalled Taylor. “It’s a one-scene script in which you are going to call me ‘a tired, tacky wench’ and she was like, ‘I’m down.’ “
A month later, Dern said that line is what sealed the deal, explaining to Entertainment Tonight, “Even better is when she’s speaking to you on the phone, asking you if there’s any way you could possibly be willing to say these words to her.”
Since their collaboration, Dern has seemingly become an integral part of Swift’s squad, as the two have recently been spotted out having dinner together in New York City, along with fellow girl gang members Greta Gerwig and Zoë Kravitz.
