Kodak Black Pays Heartfelt Tribute To XXXTENTACION: ‘We Lost A Legend’

Kodak Black has paid tribute to his late friend XXXTENTACION with a heartfelt letter that he’s shared on social media.

On Friday (March 3), Yak took to Instagram to post a meaningful yet simple message for his fallen brethren. In his message, Kodak reflected on XXX’s undeniable impact on Hip Hop and their native Broward County in South Florida.

“Nothing really,” Kodak wrote in the post accompanied by a close-up photo of XXX with blue hair. “Just was thinking about you bro. DAM BROWARD COUNTY WE LOST A LEGEND. @xxxtentacion one of the best things to ever happen to this small town I call home. Next post is this young kid who kinda reminds me of Jah.”

In the next slide, Kodak Black shared a picture of an artist named Bryant Barnes, a musician whose music happens to remind the “Super Gremlin” rapper of XXXTentacion. In response, Barnes thanked Kodak on his own Instagram Story before paying homage to XXX and referring to the late rapper as a “legend.”

Kodak Black has made it his mission to pay tribute to his late friend since XXXTENTACION was shot and killed in 2018. In September of that year, Yak claimed he could speak with the deceased rapper.

“RIP XXX HE TALKS TO ME,” Kodak Black tweeted at the time.

Sometime later in 2018, Kodak shared an interesting take on X’s death on the song “Malcolm X.X.X.,” a song from his Dying to Live album. On the song, Kodak compares XXXTentatcion’s passing to the tragic murder of civil rights activist, Malcolm X.

“X was tryna buy a bike and he got gunned down/ X was tryna change his life, but he got burned down/ X wasn’t ridin’ with no pipe so he got gunned down/ Listen, do as I say, don’t do as I do/ Nine out of 10, it ain’t gon’ end up lookin’ good for you,” Kodak raps on the track.

Thanks to their strong relationship, Kodak Black was able to collaborate with XXXTENTACION on the song “Roll in Peace” which released in 2017. The song features on Kodak’s Project Baby 2 mixtape which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 shifting 50,000 album equivalent units in its first week, including 39,000 streaming equivalent units, and 8,000 being from pure sales.

XXXTENATCION’s accused killers are currently on trial for the murder. One of the suspects Robert Allen agreed to testify against his three co-defendants after pleading guilty to lesser charges in 2022. If convicted, the other three suspects — Michael Boatwright, Dedrick Williams and Trayvon Newsome — could face life in prison.
