“It’s kind of futuristic, but also very real and grounded,” Lopez said of the bodysuits the characters wear in the film
Jennifer Lopez is getting candid about her Atlas wardrobe.
The musician and actress, 54, shared her thoughts about the costumes in the new film — which primarily consisted of skintight black bodysuits — something her costar Sterling K. Brown couldn’t help but tease to PEOPLE at the film’s premiere on Monday, May 20 at the Egyptian Theatre in Los Angeles.
“Are you saying we weren’t fashion forward in the film?” Brown jokes. “You weren’t feeling the body condom that I was rocking?”
Lopez chimed in to say that she felt the costume that she wore was “appropriate” for the story that they were trying to tell in the sci-fi film.
“It’s kind of futuristic, but also very real and grounded,” she explains. “I liked it. I liked it a lot. It’s a different type of fashion.”
“It’s not glam and how people are used to seeing me,” she continues. “But I think that Atlas character was a very disheveled kind of person who was not totally in control of all of her life and emotions and everything else that’s going on.”
Brown added that Lopez’s character was in “the process of getting her stuff together,” to which the Marry Me actress agreed. “And so, it was perfect for the character I think,” she says.
In Atlas, Lopez plays Atlas Shepherd, a “brilliant but misanthropic data analyst with a deep distrust of artificial intelligence,” per a synopsis.
She “joins a mission to capture a renegade robot with whom she shares a mysterious past. But when plans go awry, her only hope of saving the future of humanity from AI is to trust it.”
Lopez stars alongside Brown, Simu Liu, Gregory James Cohan, Abraham Popoola, Lana Parrilla and Mark Strong in the film directed by Brad Peyton, who previously helmed the Dwayne Johnson movies San Andreas and Rampage, among other films.
The This Is Me…Now: A Love Story star walked the red carpet of the premiere of the film, alongside Liu and Brown, without her husband Ben Affleck, 51.
Lopez’s look for the event was completely opposite of her character in the film. The actress donned a white sleeveless tube top with a long black skirt that fanned out around her, creating a glam red carpet ensemble. She also styled her hair in a sleek bun and wore a silver choker with matching earrings, completing the look with a small black clutch.
