No, Jenna Ortega was not in a serious relationship with Johnny Depp.
The 21-year-old actor addressed the rumor in an interview with BuzzFeed Celeb posted to YouTube Aug. 26 when responding to a question about “the craziest rumor” she’s heard about herself.
“Probably that I was in a serious relationship with Johnny Depp and I wanted everybody to leave us alone,” she said sarcastically.
“It’s so insane to me. Like, I never spoke on that. I never said anything like that. Articles really do just make up their own quotes, but I thought that that was pretty hilarious,” she added.
She said her “Death of a Unicorn” co-star Richard E. Grant once brought it up to her on set.
“I was on set with Richard E. Grant and he came up to me and he just said, ‘So, you and Johnny?’ And I laughed because I don’t know that person,” she said of Depp, who’s 61.
The “Wednesday” star appears in Sabrina Carpenter’s new music video for “Taste.” Her upcoming movie, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” opens in theaters Sept. 6.
Ortega told TODAY on Aug. 19 how she became involved with the horror-comedy sequel.
“Immediate yes. There was pressure, so maybe there was, like, five minutes of hesitation,” she said.
When she received the script, she said she “pulled over on the side of the road” to read it. Then, she called her team and said she was doing the project.
Ortega, whose credits also include recent “Scream” movies and “X,” has carved out a niche for herself in the horror genre.
“When I was younger, I was scared of everything,” she said.
“But I think I got older and I realized that excitement is the same as fear, so it’s like when I’m scared I can just tell myself I’m excited. And you can do the same vice versa, but I just tried to place it somewhere else because I hated being scared all the time,” she added.
