Government urged to recruit more teachers – Retired educationists

The Ghana National Association of Retired Educationist (GNARED) has appealed to government to recruit more teachers to help reduce the high teacher-pupil ratio in basic schools.

Admissions into teacher training colleges should also be on merit to help train committed, dedicated and hardworking teachers with the requisite professional skills to improve education delivery in the country.

A communique signed by Augustine Mensah, National Chairman of the Association and issued in Kumasi, said this was the surest way to address the falling standards of education in the country.

The group said there is the need to improve academic infrastructure such as classroom blocks, libraries, laboratories and accommodation for teachers, especially in rural communities.

It called on government to strengthen the monitoring and supervision in schools to help reduce teacher absenteeism and other negative practices that affected teachers’ output in schools.

GNARED further called on the government to improve the conditions of service for teachers and create opportunities for them to upgrade their skills to improve classroom performance.
