Brooke Shields Celebrates 23 Years of Marriage with Husband Chris Henchy: ‘Still Giddy to Be Stuck with You’
The ‘Mother of the Bride’ star shared photos from her 2001 wedding on Instagram on May 26 to mark the occasion
Brooke Shields is celebrating a special milestone!
On Sunday, May 26, the Mother of the Bride star, 58, marked 23 years of marriage with her husband, Chris Henchy, by sharing photos from the couple’s 2001 wedding on Instagram. One shot captures the newlyweds posing on a balcony with their arms around each other as Henchy, 60, held his wife’s bouquet.
Another throwback photo shows Shields kneeling down inside a church while wearing her wedding gown. She received a sweet kiss from a dog as Henchy looked on.
Shields also included more recent photos of the pair, including a candid selfie taken in front of a scenic water view in Europe.
The model and actress captioned her anniversary post, “Today marks 23 years married to the love of my life 🤍. Still giddy to be stuck with you, Henchy!”
A number of Shields’ famous friends sent their well-wishes in the comments, including Debi Mazar, who wrote, “Love you both! Auguri (Portuguese for “all the best”).
Photographer Bruce Weber commented with a series of emojis: “🙌🙌🙌🙌
Shields and Henchy, who first met in 1999 and got engaged in Mexico in 2000, actually have two wedding anniversaries as they got married twice. They first tied the knot in April 2001 in a small, intimate ceremony on Catalina Island in California. Just weeks later in May, the pair said “I do” all over again at a bigger wedding in Palm Springs, California.
Earlier this month, Shields opened up to PEOPLE about how she and Henchy — who share daughters Rowan, 21, and Grier, 18 — keep their marriage healthy and happy. She said good communication has been key to making their relationship work all these years.
“I think you have to constantly make sure you discuss things rather than let them fester,” she explained. “And you have to be willing to adapt to the other person growing and changing.”
“Sometimes you don’t grow and change at the same rate,” she continued. “And that can be really hard because what you initially fell in love with looks different. It doesn’t mean it’s bad, it just is different.”
“It’s like we have to get to know each other as people at this age, whereas we met in our early 30s,” she added of the changing dynamics in her marriage.
Shields said she’s learned to speak up when something bothers her rather than assuming her spouse can read her mind.
“The things that were cute in the beginning aren’t cute now,” she told PEOPLE. “So I’ll be like, ‘That doesn’t fit with me anymore. Can we find another way of ribbing me? That doesn’t feel good anymore. It felt good in my 30s. It doesn’t feel good in my late 50s.’ ”
Shields and Henchy will soon be facing a new chapter in their marriage as they become empty nesters when Grier heads off to college this fall. The Jane the Virgin star told PEOPLE the prospect of no longer having her girls at home has her feeling off-kilter.
“[I’m] not ready,” she admitted. “I thought I would be relieved, but I don’t know. I’ll see if when I get there, but I think I’m just going to be even… the thought of no longer living 24/7 in the house with these people, that I’ve raised, it’s just a very foreign … it’s like going to a totally foreign territory.”
