A Sequel To The Original “Ghostbusters” Has Been Confirmed For 2020
Who they gonna call? The old director’s son, Jason Reitman.
The original Ghostbusters was directed by Ivan Reitman. The new one will be directed by his son, Jason, the director of such movies as Juno (with Ellen Page and the indie music) and Up In The Air (George Clooney as travelling guy-who-fires-people). Director Junior told Entertainment Weekly of his unimpeachable credentials for director-of-sequel: “I’ve always thought of myself as the first Ghostbusters fan, when I was a 6-year-old visiting the set. I wanted to make a movie for all the other fans.” Fair enough. As for how exactly the new movie will be connected to the two from the 80s, “it will be the next chapter in the original franchise. It is not a reboot. What happened in the ‘80s happened in the ‘80s, and this is set in the present day.” Whether or not that means a return by Bill Murray and company is still unclear; this information will come later because, per Reitman Jr., the movie, as its release draws nearer, will “unwrap like a present.”
How does dad feel about this? In short, proud: “it will be a passing of the torch both inside and out. It was a decision he had to come to himself. He worked really hard to be independent and developed a wonderful career on his own. So I was quite surprised when he came to me with Gil [Kenan] and said, ‘I know I’ve been saying for 10 years I’m the last person who should make a Ghostbusters movie, but…I have this idea.’ Literally, I was crying by the end of it, it was so emotional and funny.”
The new Ghostbusters is set to release in 2020.
