3 Johnny Depp Films With Huge Budgets That Failed Miserably
Johnny Depp is undoubtedly one of Hollywood’s most talented and highly dedicated actors. The effort he puts into a role and the fact that he has always brought a new look and performance with every film is a highly inspiring aspect of the actor. Like any other actor, Depp has also faced a series of successes and failures in his career.
However, some of the failures considerably put a dent in his career and led some to question his choices and bankability as a movie star. Here are 3 of his biggest failures which tanked miserably at the box office despite their huge production budgets.
1. Dark Shadows
Johnny Depp and Tim Burton’s collaborations throughout the years have always brought something unique, weird, and special out of the actor. Their most recent collaboration was in 2012’s Dark Shadows.
Audiences expected another gothic classic like Edward Scissorhands but the film turned out to be their weakest one yet. It only managed to earn $245 million over a $150 million production budget. (according to Box Office Mojo)
2. The Lone Ranger
Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer starred in one of the former’s most commercially disappointing films with 2013’s The Lone Ranger. The film was made on a lavish budget of $215 million but the film only managed to recoup $260 million and it became a big box office bomb. (according to Box Office Mojo). It arguably may be Depp’s biggest failure in his entire career.
3. Transcendence
Johnny Depp’s 2014 sci-fi film Transcendence was undoubtedly ambitious in its plot and visuals. However, the film proved to be too confusing and complex for audiences and didn’t connect with the film’s intentions. With a budget of $100 million, it only managed to earn $103 million making it a big flop. (according to Box Office Mojo)
Depp recently played King Louis XV in 2023’s Jeanne du Barry where his performance was lauded by critics. However, the film was not a hit at the box office. He will direct the upcoming biopic based on the life of Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani titled Modi. The film will star Riccardo Scamarcio in the titular role with Al Pacino in a supporting role.
