Zöe addressed the incident in a post about her Oscars dress, writing, “here’s a picture of my dress at the award show where we are apparently assaulting people on stage now.”
The post didn’t go over well with social media users, who pointed out comments that a then-24-year-old Zöe made about a then-14-year-old Jaden Smith during an interview with V Magazine. While speaking about working with Jaden on After Earth, Zöe stated, “There were moments that I was hanging out with Jaden and thinking, I can’t believe you’re 14, I have to check myself, like what I say to you.” She added, “He has so much personality and so much swag, he is so much cooler than I am. And he’s so handsome, I was always like, when you’re older, you know, we’ll hang out… Nope, that’s inappropriate, you’re 14.”
Two years later, when Jaden was 16, Zöe referred to him as her “date” and “the love of my life” at a red carpet event.
In addition to her comments about Jaden, Zöe’s friendship with designer Alexander Wang, who has been accused of assault and sexual harassment by several people, has come into question. Zöe’s relationship with actor Michael Fassbender, who has been accused of domestic abuse, was also brought up amid the backlash. Zöe has yet to comment on the backlash.
