A popular Kumawood Actress, Matilda Asare, has defended President Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo over his comments about the role of female gender activists in the country.
The celebrated actress said contrary to suggestions that the President embarrassed the country in the eyes of the international community, she believes the President was tactful and spoke to facts and realities.
The President has come under a barrage of criticisms following his comments on women empowerment and gender role in Ghana during a panel discussion in Vancouver, Canada.
According to her, those criticizing the President were being hypocritical, emphasizing that “no one, irrespective of their gender, must expect to be given opportunities on a sliver plata without working for it”
Matilda Asare however spared a special shade for the Minority side of the political divide, asserting that their favourite idol, Former President John Dramani, would have found himself wanting had he been the one on the panel.
“We all know JM has communication issues and tends to exhibit lack of tact and diplomacy, trust me he would have embarrassed this country big time” Matilda said.
She said she felt very dumbfounded to hear some of her colleagues also playing to the gallery when “they are very much aware of the fact that modern feminist activism is not about sitting armfolded and waiting for opportunities”
“We must all fight for it if we want to be recognised. The President was right in every sense. We can’t expect to be recognized if we don’t work for it” she noted.
Matilda further noted “now that people are taking advantages of government’s social intervention policies such as PFJ, NEIP, PERD, amongst others, we cannot sit down and wait for authorities to give us opportunities, we must go out there and search for it, it doesn’t matter the gender ”
