We won’t impose 450-seat chamber on Ghanaians – Kyei-Mensah Bonsu

The Majority Leader of Parliament, Mr Osei Kyei-Mensah Bonsu, has said parliament, as an institution, will take the views of critics into account in deciding whether or not to okay a new 450-seat chamber proposed to be built by the Parliamentary Service Board.

Social media – Facebook and Twitter – have been awash with harsh criticism against the Ghanaian parliament and its leadership in connection with the new proposed chamber.

Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, who strongly supports the construction of the new chamber, told journalists in Accra on Thursday, 4 July 2019 that the majority of those opposing the move are doing so because they do not have relevant information.

“When you listen to all the commentary, the majority of people do not have the relevant information just like some MPs who have condemned the move also do not have such information…

“So, once people have the relevant information and still oppose the construction of the building, we [parliament] are only representatives and, so, in that case, we can’t impose anything on them, we’ll have to listen to our representatives…

“If Ghanaians insist they’re not happy with it, we’ll act accordingly. The decision we’ll take, we’ll factor in the sensibilities of the people of this country”.
