UW Police denies investigating alleged kidnappers at Wa

The Upper West Regional Police Command has denied claims that the police administration is investigating certain persons suspected to be kidnappers who have moved into the regional capital, Wa.

The denial by the police followed rumours that they were investigating certain suspicious characters, mostly foreigners, who have moved into the region with the sole mission to kidnap.

The alleged kidnappers ostensibly engage in petty trading like sale of car decoration items or other movable articles, who usually move from one public place to another with their local accomplices, the source said.

But, when the regional police command was contacted on Tuesday by the GNA to ascertain the veracity of the rumour, the Public Relations Officer, Inspector Ohene Boateng, flatly denied the allegation as untrue.

Though, he quickly added that the Police had received a report that a three-year-old baby boy had been kidnapped in Wa, it was later found out that the boy had died after falling into a manhole in a nearby house.

The Inspector entreated the public to report any suspicion of kidnapping and other criminal activities to the police for swift action.

He said the Regional Police Command has deployed Police Intelligence Personnel to certain flashpoints and suspected terrorist prone areas as part of security measures instituted to protect lives and property.

A conflict Desk Study conducted by the Upper West Regional Peace Council identified over 20 flash spots in five municipal and district assemblies, with Wa Municipal having six flashpoints.

Inspector Boateng said the creation of police and media platforms was one of the measures adopted by the regional police command to gather information from the public for effective crime prevention and control.

There had been several reports of highway robbery, stealing and threats of terrorism in the region recently, compelling many public means of transport now moving with police escorts at night and during the day.
