His son wanted PinkPantheress to follow him on Instagram, but wound up getting a whole lot more.
Despite a new album, the late 2023 end of his Vegas residency, and a headlining spot at the Super Bowl Halftime Show, Usher may have just had his wildest moment of 2024.
In an Instagram Story, the R&B superstar detailed how his 15-year-old son, Naviyd, stole his phone in the hopes of connecting with PinkPantheress.
The covert mission went down about a week ago when Naviyd stole his dad’s phone to pose as the rapper in order to get PinkPantheress’s attention. He sent a direct message to the R&B singer, telling her she was his “favorite artist,” and he’s her “true biggest fan.” Naviyd, posing as Usher, also asked her to follow him on Instagram.
“Now, I just so happened to check my DMs earlier this week,” Usher shared on his Instagram story, “and saw a message exchange with someone with a Powerpuff girl as their profile pic… so I’m like the hell is this… I open it and I’m like oh this boy done DMd this girl from my damn phone.”
A screengrab of the DM exchange shows PinkPantheress responding, “hahahahahaa.”
Naviyd replied, “OMG I DIDN’T THING U WERE GONNA [ANSWER].”
That’s when the “U Got It Bad” singer entered the chat. “I’m so sorry … my son is a super fan,” he wrote.
”Don’t apologise!” she responded. “I’d love to host y’all at the next show.”
Usher, who recently married longtime girlfriend Jennifer Goicoechea in Vegas, says he had to act like his son wasn’t allowed to go because he stole the phone. However, he reconsidered and let him hit the show because he’s such a big fan.
He also shared another photo of Naviyd and PinkPantheress backstage at the show. Ultimately, Naviyd manifested a whole other level than getting the “Reason” songstress to follow him on Instagram.
Usher’s “parental takeaway” was that his son “violated” his trust, but appreciated “the hustle and him making it happen.” It might not be a lesson taught in parenting classes, but Naviyd certainly got what he wanted and more.
