Travis Scott has shown his support to Kanye West on his new album Utopia.
The Houston rapper’s long-awaited project was released on Friday (July 28) and includes a song called “Skitzo” featuring Young Thug. Produced by Boi-1da and Jahaan Sweet, the track finds Scott reaffirming his loyalty to Kanye while referencing his bid to become President of the United States.
“Crazy how they love to talk shit and got no Trident/ I’m loyal, bitch, I got Ye over Biden,” he raps.
Though he doesn’t actually make an appearance on the album, Yeezy has numerous production and songwriting credits on Utopia, including on “Thank God,” “God’s Country” and “Telekinesis.”
Travis Scott’s support for Kanye West is notable considering a wave of creative and commercial partners cut ties with the rap and fashion mogul last year following his antisemitic comments.
Longtime collaborator Pusha Tstepped down as the president of G.O.O.D. Music and was straight to the point in condemning Kanye’s “disappointing” remarks.
“It’s definitely affected me,” he told The Los Angeles Times in November. “It’s been disappointing. As a Black man in America, there is no room for bigotry or hate speech. So yeah. It’s been very disappointing, let’s talk straight.”
Meanwhile, major companies such as adidas, Balenciaga and Creative Arts Agency also parted ways with Kanye, who subsequently saw his billion-dollar net worth nosedive.
Travis Scott and Kanye West’s long-running relationship began in 2012 when La Flame signed a publishing deal with G.O.O.D. Music, which was facilitated by the legendary DJ Premier, who knew Travis’ family growing up.
“[Travis] was trying to get me to sign him at a time when the music he was making just wasn’t in my lane,” Premier told Pitchfork last year. “He came to my parents’ house and sat with me, back when Nokia flip phones were a thing.
“He was sneaking pictures and his aunt is telling him to stop taking pictures. I was like, ‘You know what? Kanye might be into what you’re doing right now.’ I called to co-sign him like, ‘Yo, he’s got something.’ Next thing you know, he’s signing with Ye.”
The pair later collaborated on several songs including “Piss On Your Grave,” “Watch,” “Wash Us In the Blood” and “Praise God.”
Utopia is Travis Scott’s first solo album since 2018’s Astroworld and boasts features from Drake, Beyoncé, The Weeknd, Future, Playboi Carti, 21 Savage, SZA, Kid Cudi and many others.
