The Dallas Cowboys have made it no secret that they’re in the market for a running back in the 2025 NFL Draft. With picks at No. 12, No. 44, and No. 76, Dallas is expected to invest in the position early. But while big names like Ashton Jeanty and Omarion Hampton have been the focus, the team’s latest meeting suggests they might be looking outside the usual suspects.
Enter Damien Martinez. Martinez, a University of Miami running back and Lewisville High School product, is set to meet with the Cowboys during their exclusive”Dallas Day” event. This invite-only session is reserved for players with DFW-area connections, giving the front office a chance to evaluate local talent up close.
While Martinez isn’t as highly touted as Jeanty or Hampton, his production speaks for itself. The 6-foot, 232-pound back rushed for over 3,000 yards and 26 touchdowns during his time at Oregon State and Miami, proving he can handle a heavy workload. He brings a physical running style that could complement the Cowboys’ backfield-especially with free agency looming for incumbent starter Rico Dowdle.
So why does this meeting matter?
Because it signals that the Cowboys aren’t locked into a single draft strategy at running back. Martinez isn’t projected to be a first-round pick, which means Dallas could use its top selection on another position-perhaps offensive line or defense-while targeting a running back later.
By bringing Martinez in for a closer look, the Cowboys might be setting themselves up for a mid-round steal. He may not have Jeanty’s national buzz, but his size, vision, and experience could make him a valuable piece in a committee backfield.
The Cowboys have shown a pattern of taking advantage of their “Dallas Day” prospects. Last year, they signed multiple undrafted free agents from the event, and the front office has a history of mining local talent. Martinez could be the next in line.
Dallas’ interest in Martinez doesn’t necessarily mean they’re out on Jeanty or Hampton, but it does indicate they’re keeping their options open. With the draft approaching, the team is doing its homework on all levels of talent.
