T.I. CHECKS DJ WHO DIDN’T UNDERSTAND HIT-PLAYING ASSIGNMENT: ’THAT AIN’T ONE OF ‘EM’
T.I. had to correct an Atlanta-area DJ for not knowing his musical history, in a moment that had to be embarrassing for all involved.
In a video posted to Instagram on Friday (May 26), the King of the South can be seen standing onstage next to DJ Toomp, singing his praises to the packed crowd in the Bankhead district of Atlanta, GA.
“We had a hit record, you know what I’m saying?” he said. “Play one of them muthafuckas!” The DJ then spun Destiny’s Child track, “Soldier,” which features Tip alongside Lil Wayne — but this was not produced by DJ Toomp.
This did not go over well with T.I., who shook his head and remarked, “That ain’t one of ’em!” as the track faded out.
The ATL native then reminded the audience why he was one of the greatest to ever emerge from the south as he rapped “Dope Boyz” — from 2001’s I’m Serious album, which was, indeed, produced by Toomp — off the top of the dome, with the audience singing along.
Considered one of the premier producers who brought Southern trap music to the mainstream, DJ Toomp (real name Aldrin Davis) was all but single-handedly responsible for Tip’s (real name Clifford Harris) first four albums.
In addition to producing the aforementioned “Dope Boyz,” Toomp earned T.I. his first — and to date, his only — Grammy with “What You Know” in 2006, in addition to such tracks as “Trap Muzik,” “24s,” and “Motivation.”
Moreover, Toomp was behind the boards for tracks by artists such as Ludacris, Pastor Troy, Rick Ross, and Kanye West.
T.I. and Toomp were in attendance for a tribute concert for the late Clay Evans, the former VP of Grand Hustle, who died in March.
Evans — one of the founding staff members of T.I.’s imprint who also served as Lil Duval’s manager for close to a decade — passed away about two weeks after suffering a massive stroke from which he never fully recovered.
“It is with a heavy heart that the Evans family announces the untimely passing of my Father, Claybourne Evans Jr.,” his son shared via Evans’ Instagram page at the time. “He fought a good fight and transitioned peacefully surrounded by close family and friends on today, March 24, 2023. He lived an extraordinary life filled with Love, Hard Work, and Laughter. He touched many lives…Continue His Legacy.”
