Striking MMT Drivers call off strike

Drivers of the Metro Mass Transit in Kumasi, who embarked on a strike action yesterday, have resumed work today after the intervention of Mr. Simon Osei Mensah, the Ashanti Regional Minister.

The drivers of the state- owned company providing one of the biggest public commercial transport in the country, went on strike over what they termed as gross mismanagement of the company, unpaid allowances and lack of respect for the junior staff.

The situation caused the numerous clientele across the country who depended on the MMT buses to walk over long distances.

They had vowed never to call off the strike until they had spoken to the Minister of Transport himself and the Ashanti Regional Minister.

However, following the visit of the Ashanti Regional Minister late afternoon yesterday, the striking drivers, resolved to revoke the strike action.

Mr Osei Mensah in a meeting with the drivers asked them to exercise restraint and go back to work, assuring to take all the necessary steps to meet the management and get all the issues resolved within the shortest possible time.

Some of the drivers told the Ghana News Agency on Thursday that they had resumed work based on the trust they reposed in the Regional Minister to convey their concerns to the appropriate quarters.

Meanwhile, activities at the terminal has returned to normal when the GNA visited today.
