Simi reacts to JAMB’s cut-off mark for 2019/2020 university admission
Simi is unhappy, to say the least, with the approval of the latest cut-off mark for admission into tertiary institutions in Nigeria by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
The 19th Policy Meeting on Admissions to Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria on Tuesday, June 11, 2019, approved 160 as the national minimum benchmark for admission into public universities for the 2019/2020 academic year.
140 was approved as the minimum Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) score for admission into private universities as well as 120 UTME score for admission into public polytechnics.
However, Simi, 31, believes the new cut-off marks could be unfavourable for many people.
During a Q&A session with her fans on Twitter Tuesday, the sensational singer argued that the educational system is “faulty” as it kills the dreams of talented candidates with great potentials but “different academic strengths”.
One person asked: “In your country, the youth have been idiot-shamed simply because they were deemed to have failed certain examinations. Isn’t examination a test of the competence of the teacher than that of the student in sane climes? Especially in a country where failure is a culture.”

She replied: “I feel like the current method of education is faulty. Ppl have different strengths – but we were raised to believe only certain talents or career paths can bring you success.
“So we see a lot of potential and ideas dying cos they were born to the right ppl in the wrong climate.”
Simi added: “So the problem is not just the incompetence of the teachers – it’s sometimes the misplacement of priorities. The inadequacy of the educational system to cater to the diversity of the human mind.”
