The “Only Murders in the Building” actress, 32, revealed the news in an Instagram Story on Tuesday, following days of speculation that she gossiped about Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet to Taylor Swift at the 2024 Golden Globes on Sunday.
“Focusing on what really matters,” she wrote, alongside a video of record producer boyfriend Benny Blanco spending adorable quality time with two kids. “I’m off social media for a while.”
The singer, who recently said she may only have one more album in her, briefly left social media in October, too.
“My heart breaks to see all the horror, hate, violence, and terror that’s going on in the world,” she explained at the time.
“People being tortured and killed or any act of hate towards any one group is horrific,” she wrote, noting that “violence needs to be stopped for good.”
“I’m sorry if my words will never be enough for everyone or a hashtag. I just can’t stand by innocent people getting hurt. That’s what makes me sick. I wish I could change the world. But a post won’t.”
Oddly enough, in February 2023 she took a social media break shortly after surpassing Jenner as the most followed person on Instagram because she was “too old for this.”
Gomez’s latest decision to log off, however, comes days after she attended the 81st Golden Globes and was caught on camera having an animated conversation with best friend Swift, 34, and Keleigh Sperry at their table.
Many onlookers — including lip-reading expert Jeremy Freeman — believed Gomez was telling her pals that she asked Chalamet to take a picture and his girlfriend, Jenner, told her “no.” Gomez went on to deny that in a comment on E! News’ Instagram post about the exchange.
“Noooooo I told Taylor about two of my friends who hooked up. Not that that’s anyone business,” Gomez claimed.
The “Wonka” actor also denied that there was any feud between Gomez and the “Kardashians” reality star. “They’re all good,” he told TMZ.
Gomez and Chalamet worked together on 2019’s rom-com “A Rainy Day in New York.” The actress, meanwhile, has had a slew of ups and downs with the Kardashian/Jenner family over the years.
Kourtney Kardashian reportedly had a fling with Justin Bieber when Gomez and the musician were on a brief break in 2015, and Kendall Jenner’s best friend, Hailey Baldwin, went on to marry Bieber in 2018.
Baldwin has at times defended herself against Gomez’s fans on social media, but the pair shut down feud speculation last year.
In February 2023, however, fans believed Baldwin and Kylie threw shade when they released a video about their eyebrows shortly after Gomez did.
“This is reaching. no shade towards Selena ever and I didn’t see her eyebrow posts!” Kylie wrote via TikTok. “U guys are making something out of nothing. this is silly.”
Gomez responded at the time: “Agreed @kyliejenner it’s all unnecessary. I’m a fan of Kylie!”
That same month, when Gomez stepped away from social media, her little sister, Gracie Elliott Teefey, took to the app with Kim Kardashian’s daughter, North, to make homemade pasta in a cute video.
Swift, meanwhile, has had her own drama with Kim Kardashian and her ex-husband, Kanye West, and she revealed in Time magazine last month that she fled to a “foreign country” for a year after the exes took her “down” during a “bleak” moment after the release of his song “Famous.”
“You have a fully manufactured frame job, in an illegally recorded phone call, which Kim Kardashian edited and then put out to say to everyone that I was a liar. That took me down psychologically to a place I’ve never been before.”
In the song, he rapped the line, “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex/ Why? I made that bitch famous” and claimed that Swift had consented to the lyrics.
“I was afraid to get on phone calls. I pushed away most people in my life because I didn’t trust anyone anymore,” Swift revealed to the outlet. “I went down really, really hard.”
