Johnny Depp has been in the headlines this year, not for his artistic projects, but due to his legal issues. His trial with ex-wife Amber Heard, who accused the actor of domestic abuse and he countersued for defamation, was all the talk earlier in 2022.
All the controversy pushed Disney to remove Depp from future Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Even though he emerged victorious from the trial, he isn’t considering returning as Captain Jack Sparrow because he says they didn’t believe he was innocent and thus feels “betrayed”. This after the actor himself said he wanted to give a “proper ending” to his character.
Even before all this, Disney had considered killing off Jack Sparrow. Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer told The Hollywood Reporter: “You can’t (kill Jack Sparrow). We tried to kill him. It didn’t work.”
Although he gave few additional details, Bruckheimer is said to be one of Depp’s biggest supporters and is still fighting for the actor to return as Jack Sparrow. However, he would neither confirm nor deny whether that will happen.
“I can’t answer (if he would rehire Johnny Depp),” he said. “You have to ask them. He’s a friend, a great actor and it’s a shame that our personal life leaks into everything we do.”
