The news that Johnny Depp’s long and very public legal battles with Amber Heard seem to have been settled has seen fans of the actor campaigning for his return to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise as Captain Jack Sparrow. While Depp previously stated that he would not be interested in reprising his role due to the way Disney dumped him while he was embroiled in accusations leveled at him by Heard, it seems that Pirates long-time producer Jerry Bruckheimer has not given up hope of getting Captain Jack back to the franchise one more time. In a recent interview he responded to the question of whether Depp’s character would be brought back for one more run out just for the purpose of killing him off. Bruckheimer had a somewhat humorous response, telling The Hollywood Reporter:
“You can’t [kill Captain Jack Sparrow]. We tried to kill him. It didn’t work!”
Bruckheimer’s comment referenced how Depp’s famous character seemingly met his demise during Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, when he was taken down by the Kraken and seemed to be lost forever. However, the character was saved from his fate in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End. Some believe that is where the story of Captain Jack Sparrow should have ended, but of course, you can’t keep a blockbuster franchise down for long, and two sequels later it seems that the Pirates saga is far from done.
According to Jerry Bruckheimer, there are multiple Pirates movies currently being developed. Based on his recent comments, a reboot of the franchise featuring Margot Robbie as the film’s lead is one of these, but that will apparently come after another project that Bruckheimer seemed to suggest had taken a precedent. Many fans still believe that one of these will see the return of Johnny Depp for his final Jack Sparrow outing. Bruckheimer said:
“I think that [reboot] script will come forward at a certain point. We developed two different stories for Pirates and the other one’s going forward first, so that’s what we’re working on, to try to get that one made.”
Bruckheimer was asked directly in the same interview about whether Johnny Depp was part of those plans, to which the producer commented:
“We’re still working on it. Nothing’s definite yet, but we continue to take little baby steps getting towards a screenplay.”
The recent announcement that Amber Heard will not be launching her appeal against the decision made in the couple’s libel trial earlier this year, which would have potentially seen them back in the courtroom again, will have come as a timely boost for Depp. Having been cast in a number of small roles, the actor will now be looking to get back to doing what he does best and putting on a show for larger audiences on the big screen. Whether this includes a Captain Jack reprisal is something that it seems we can only wait to find out.
