The Ashanti Region police has debunked the death toll in media reports of gory clashes between some townsfolks of the Antoa Achiase community and a group of artisans from Magazine, during which eight persons were reported dead.
According to the said reports, the incident occurred in that Community in the Ejisu Municipality in Ashanti when an altercation between the magazine youth who had gone there to bury their dead colleague and some community members, turned violent.
But in a rebuttal, Superintendent Stephen Awuah, the police Commander for Kenyasi District, where the issue was first reported, told the Ghana News Agency that the report was over-exaggerated.
He said the incident took place at the community’s cemetery where an argument ensuing between some bereaved town folk burying their relatives and ‘Magazine boys, who were in a hurry to bury their dead colleague when they had to wait for their turn to do so, went rowdy.
Though he could not confirm the casualties, Supt. Awuah said there were no deaths and that everything was calm and normal in the community.
He said no arrests have so far been made and called on the media to always cross-check their facts with the police before putting it out there in the public domain.
