Nima redevelopment: Residents won’t be evicted – Atta-Akyea

The Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing, Samuel Atta-Akyea has assured residents of Nima and Maamobi that they need not fear any eviction as the government plans its redevelopment of the area.

Speaking on Eyewitness News, the Minister said the redevelopment of the area will be in the best interest of the residents.

“It will not amount to an eviction. It will amount to bringing the best amenities to our people. It will amount to Zongo and Inner City Development,” he said. As part of this “slum upgrading,” which was first announced by the President, the land will be used as equity to enable private developers to upgrade part of the land for the inhabitants.

The residents are expected to move into high-rise flats and their original land further used for new metropolitan housing.

“Where they are living will be yielded as space for the developers to come out with the estate metropolitan houses you can find anywhere in the world,” the Minister explained again.

Mr. Atta-Akyea added that this will be “private sector-led without the government paying a coin. The government is just doing what we call the sensitisation and also helping to get the land properly laid out for them.”

Though there is no sense that there has not been proper consultation with the residents, the Minister expects that “they will be very excited with the development.”

The MP for Ayawaso North, where Nima is located, Yussif Issaka Jajah, has said the government has not provided him and all other relevant stakeholders with the necessary information about the redevelopment project.
