NIA starts mass Ghana card registration in Volta region amidst technical challenges

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has begun the Ghana Card mass registration exercise in the Volta Region amidst some technical challenges.

The month-long registration exercise is expected to capture at least 85 per cent of Ghanaians in the Region in all 18 districts and municipalities.

At about 0950 hours when the Ghana News Agency visited some registration centres in the Ho municipality, it noted that, the Authority was yet to issue a card to anyone though the processes began at 0700 hours.

At all seven centres visited by the GNA in Ho, almost all applicants were stuck at stage one of the five stages in the registration processes due to network failure.

At a few other centres, the GNA was told that devices for capturing the biometric data- photograph, iris, fingerprints and signature were not functioning, necessitating the processes to be put on hold.

At the Foresight Clinic and Kabore School Complex, officials told newsmen that they did not have full complement of the devices to commence work.

A Senior Registration Officer (SRO) at one of the Centres told applicants in queue that they did not have enough staff to handle the numbers that only 25 persons could be registered for the day, if the devices worked well.
