NBA YoungBoy has found a new home in music after inking a deal with Motown Records.
The Baton Rouge superstar departs Atlantic Records, where he released four studio albums, for Motown, per Billboard.
There was already a familiarity with Motown — which lives under the Universal Music Group umbrella — since that’s where YB’s Never Broke Again collective is housed for releases through a global joint venture deal signed last year.
The Never Broke Again collective has already released a pair of albums through Motown and is set to drop a third on Friday (October 28) with Nightmare on 38th Street.
NBA YoungBoy’s move to Motown becomes official in 2023 when he plans to drop music on the label. For now, he’ll continue to flood the streets through Atlantic, as he’s already notched four top 10 projects on the Billboard 200, which is the most of any artist in 2022.
According to Variety, the terms of the agreement were not disclosed but the bidding war was described as “competitive.” YoungBoy hinted at signing for $60 million to Birdman’s Cash Money Records earlier this year but that deal looks to have fallen by the wayside.
Last week, NBA YoungBoy returned with his Ma’ I Got A Family mixtape with DJ Drama, which featured assists from Nicki Minaj and Yeat.
If the project hits the Billboard 200, which it’s widely expected to do so, he will have passed JAY-Z on the list of artists with the most entries on the 200 chart. YoungBoy is currently tied with Hov at 25 entries a piece.
The 23-year-old doesn’t seem intent on slowing down just yet, as he’s promised a full 10 projects in the hands of fans before 2022 expires.
“Fun challenge ’10 tapes 1 year ??’” read a screenshot of an iPhone Note, which he captioned: “I’m finna be on 6 you think I can do it ?”
YB’s catalog has tallied 29.04 billion on-demand streams in the U.S., per Luminate.
