Miley Cyrus won her first-ever Grammy Award on Sunday (Feb. 4), as her hit “Flowers” picked up the win for best pop solo performance.

Mariah Carey presented the award to Cyrus, who was visibly shocked when her name was called.

“This MC is going to stand by this MC because this is just too iconic,” Cyrus said, understandably fan-girling over Carey after taking the stage. “I was stuck in the rain in traffic and I thought I was going to miss this moment, and I could have missed this award, that’s fine — but not Mariah Carey.”

Cyrus also offered up a story about what the moment means for her, saying, “There’s a story that I want to tell that sums up this moment and I wasn’t going to tell it, but now that Mariah is here … There was a little boy that all he wanted for his birthday was a butterfly. And so his parents gave him a butterfly net and he was so excited. He just went outside out in the sun and started swinging and swinging. But with no luck, he sat down on the ground, he finally let go, and he surrendered, and he was OK that he wasn’t going to capture this beautiful butterfly. And right when he did is when the butterfly came and landed right on the tip of his nose. And this song, ‘Flowers,’ is my butterfly. Thank you.”

Cyrus earned nominations in five additional categories for this year’s Grammy Awards, including song of the year (“Flowers”), record of the year (“Flowers”), and album of the year (Endless Summer Vacation). “Flowers” spent eight weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in 2023.
