Kerry Washington, who joins Carey in the footage, urges people to vote before they get into the Christmas spirit
It’s almost Christmas, but there’s a few more things that needs to be done before Mariah Carey can enter holiday mode.
In a hilarious video posted to social media, Carey, 55, is about to launch into “All I Want for Christmas Is You” when Kerry Washington, 47, interrupts her. The Scandal star, decked out in voters garb, tells Carey, “It’s not your season yet, Mariah. It’s voting season.”
Washington then asks if Carey is registered to vote and has a plan, which the “Emotions” singer confirms. “That’s amazing, because it’s my season before it’s her season,” the actress says as she shows off her singing chops.
Carey has been dubbed the “Queen of Christmas” for her iconic holiday hit “All I Want for Christmas Is You” off her best-selling 1994 album Merry Christmas. As for the second in line, there’s some big competition.
In 2022, Dolly Parton appeared on the December print cover of Better Homes & Gardens and was asked if she considers herself to be the queen of the holiday. The “Jolene” singer, 78, shut down the conversation swiftly.
“Now, don’t you say that! I’m not going to compete with Mariah,” Parton said. “I love her. You think of Christmas, you think of Mariah. I’m happy to be second in line to her.”
But after the 2024 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Oct. 19, Jennifer Hudson caught up with PEOPLE and said she thinks she has a good idea of who should be the princess.
“I think Mariah is the Queen of Christmas, and I’m the Princess of Christmas,” Hudson tells PEOPLE. “At least, I named myself.” She just released her first holiday album, The Gift of Love, on Oct. 18
Carey can’t brand herself as the Queen of Christmas legally after being blocked from filing the trademark by full-time Christmas musician Elizabeth Chan in 2022. That doesn’t mean she still hasn’t found a way to get into the Christmas spirit.
