“My heart is broken,” the Grammy winner said in a statement.
Mariah Carey’s mom, Patricia Carey, and older sister, Alison Carey, died on the same day over the weekend, the singer confirmed to People magazine on Monday.
“My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day,” the Grammy-winner told People in a statement.
“I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed,” she added. “I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”
The “Emotions” singer did not provide any additional details about her mother’s or sister’s cause of death.
HuffPost has reached out to Mariah Carey’s reps for additional information.
Mariah Carey has been open about her very complicated relationship with her mother, who was a Juilliard-trained opera singer and vocal coach.
“Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities. It’s never been only black-and-white — it’s been a whole rainbow of emotions,” the artist wrote in her 2020 memoir, “The Meaning of Mariah Carey,” according to People.
“Our relationship is a prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration, and disappointment. A complicated love tethers my heart to my mother’s.”
In the memoir, Mariah Carey also wrote about how her relationship with her elder siblings — brother Morgan Carey and sister Alison Carey — was complex, saying that it was “emotionally and physically safer for me not to have any contact” with either of them at the time.
