Maren Morris Files for Divorce from Ryan Hurd After 5 Years of Marriage

Maren Morris has filed for divorce from Ryan Hurd after five years of marriage.

The “My Church” singer-songwriter, 33, filed on Oct. 2 in Tennessee for a dissolution of marriage from Hurd, 36, documents obtained by PEOPLE confirm. The filing cites “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the divorce.

Documents state the pair, who share 3½-year-old son Hayes Andrew, has been separated since the filing date.

A parenting seminar order — a requirement for all Davidson County divorce cases involving children — was ordered by a judge on July 25, and indicated that Morris and Hurd would have 60 days from the date of filing their complaint to complete the seminar. Documents indicate that Morris successfully completed a four-hour parenting skills seminar on Oct. 14.

Upon Morris’ announcement that she was leaving country music due to feeling “very, very distanced” from the industry and its politics in September, Hurd praised her decision with a supportive Instagram post.

“She deserves to be celebrated, not just tolerated,” wrote Hurd at the time. “I’m so sick of watching my wife get the s— kicked out of her by the internet. I’m sick of every talking head having some kind of stupid opinion about what she says. It’s the same every time, why are you surprised when she calls out something racist or homophobic, I’m sick of people getting rewarded for it.”

“She deserves a little sunshine for the burden she has carried for every artist and fan that feels the same way. I can’t wait for that first tour and to see all of the smiling and beautiful people who needed these songs and and also need HER. I can’t wait to make music that follows the same path, whatever that is,” continued the musician. “Love you, MM. Keep on keepin’ on.”

In April, the “I Can’t Love You Anymore” singer celebrated her birthday with a sweet tribute from Hurd.
“This picture is from the weekend we got engaged,” he captioned two photos on his Instagram Story, one kissing Morris onstage in 2017. “We don’t take as many photos together these days but that’s OK. Spent the day in NYC with my powerhouse celebrating her birthday. Love you, MM. Happy birthday ????”
In a second post, he shared Morris’ photo of her lounging in bed. “Things got crazy. We ate a cake. I like getting older with you,” he gushed.

More recently, Morris and Hurd attended the Grammy Awards together in February and celebrated their milestone wedding anniversary.
“Favorite picture in our house. Happy 5 years, MM,” Hurd captioned a throwback photo from their big day via Instagram in March. “Lots of music, lots of places, lots of great times and a baby. It’s been the greatest. Blessings to each and every one of you. Give your person a big hug and tell ‘em you love them today.”

The pair, who attended the iHeartRadio Music Festival in 2022 together, first met in 2013, but didn’t actually start dating until December 2015.
“We had been friends for only a couple of years, but there was always this writing chemistry in the room, and eventually, the timing of it was undeniable. We had such a foundation built off writing so many songs over the years that we were like, ‘Why are we avoiding this?'” Morris told PEOPLE in 2017 about how their relationship evolved.

We had such a foundation built off writing so many songs over the years that we were like, ‘Why are we avoiding this?'” Morris told PEOPLE in 2017 about how their relationship evolved.

They’d go on to make their official red carpet debut as a couple at the CMT Music Awards in 2016 and get engaged the following year. In March 2018, they tied the knot at The Cordelle in Nashville, writing their own vows in a bar before the ceremony.

Before welcoming Hayes Andrew in 2020, Morris revealed that she and the fellow country singer hit a rough patch as newlyweds.
“It was probably the hardest part of our relationship,” she recalled to Esquire. “We went on our honeymoon, and then I immediately went on this gigantic tour opening for Niall Horan. It was more international touring than I had ever done. And I was gone more than I had ever been on any other tour.”
She added that the pair went to therapy amid the “tough summer” they experienced. “We have grown so much closer because we had to make some hard decisions and have some tough talks about what this future looks like and how we can make this better,” she noted. “I have always loved him, but I feel like I like him in ways I never knew I could before.”

2021 proved to be a memorable one for the pair. They released their first-ever duet “Chasing After You,” which earned them a Grammy nomination, celebrated Hayes’ first birthday and shifted their priorities.
“Music stuff is not the most important thing anymore. The most important thing is obviously our home life and each other and our kid — and music is just our job sometimes,” Hurd told PEOPLE in February 2021. “It comes third, but it doesn’t mean it’s not important; it just means that the other stuff is always going to be first.”

The following year, the pair toured separately; while Morris shared photos from a month on the road with Hayes, Hurd opened up for Sam Hunt’s concerts.
“Kids and touring is a creative adjustment that a lot of people have helped us make a reality, but we are making it work,” Morris wrote via Instagram in August 2022. “We miss @ryanhurd and can’t wait to be home.”
