John Mulaney Says Marrying Olivia Munn Is ‘One of the Most Fun Things I’ve Ever Done’
The comedian and the actress, who share 2-year-old son Malcolm tied the knot at a friend's home in New York state in July
John Mulaney is opening up about his wedding to Olivia Munn.
During an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers on Monday, Aug. 12, the comedian, 41, addressed his wedding to the actress for the first time, telling Meyers, 50, “I got married. It’s the best,” as he smiled wide and held up his hand to show off his wedding ring.
He then gave a shout-out to his mother-in-law, Kim Schmid — who was seated in the audience — yelling to her, “Hi, Mom!” When Meyers clarified that Kim is Munn’s mother, Mulaney explained, “I call her Mom now. Like you said, we got married so … I call her Mom now.”
Asked how he feels about his new in-laws, Mulaney declared, “This is the single greatest time in my life,” and said tying the knot with Munn, 44, was “one of the most fun things I’ve ever done.”
“I’ve been in a lot of interesting situations. Marrying into a large Vietnamese family is one of the most fun things I’ve ever done,” he continued with a jokingly dry delivery, prompting laughs from the audience. “But they’re the best, man.”
He then went on to quip about his in-laws, “One of them will come with you everywhere,” before explaining that they always “call me John Mulaney — full name. Full name all the time: ‘Olivia’s here with John Mulaney.’ ”
The comedian then shared how Munn’s family isn’t afraid to be direct, which is a stark contrast from his own family. “My family is white, Caucasian … so we’re uptight about a lot of topics,” he explained. “Money, health, anything — almost everything is taboo. The Luong family, they talk about anything immediately upon meeting you. ‘How much money you have?’ ‘Why you so skinny?’ ”
Mulaney and Munn married last month in an intimate ceremony at a friend’s home in New York state, a source close to Mulaney told PEOPLE at the time. Their 2-year-old son, Malcolm, and a witness were the only loved ones in attendance at the nuptials. Sam Waterston, Munn’s costar from The Newsroom, officiated.
PEOPLE first reported the couple’s relationship in May 2021. That September, Mulaney revealed during an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers that he and Munn were expecting a baby together.
“In the spring, I went to Los Angeles and met and started to date a wonderful woman named Olivia,” he told Meyers at the time. “I got into this relationship that’s been really beautiful with someone incredible. And we’re having a baby together. I was nervous when I was about to say the news.”
Their son Malcolm was born on Nov. 24, 2021.
Mulaney and Munn’s wedding news came several months after the Love Wedding Repeat star opened up publicly about her breast cancer diagnosis. Munn was diagnosed with bilateral breast cancer in 2023 after tests revealed she had luminal B, a fast-moving, aggressive cancer, in both breasts.
When she shared the news about her health in an Instagram post on March 13, she praised Mulaney for supporting her through her difficult treatment journey.
“I’m so thankful to my friends and family for loving me through this. I’m so thankful to John for the nights he spent researching what every operation and medication meant and what side effects and recovery I could expect,” she wrote. “For being there before I went into each surgery and being there when I woke up, always placing framed photos of our little boy Malcolm so it would be the first thing I saw when I opened my eyes.”
Munn later told PEOPLE that having to navigate her cancer experience without Mulaney would have felt like “climbing an iceberg.”
“I don’t think he had a moment to himself, between being an incredibly hands-on father and going to and from the hospital — taking Malcolm to the park, putting him to nap, driving to Cedars-Sinai, hanging out with me, going home, putting Malcolm to bed, coming back to me,” she said. “And he did it all happily.”
