Ice Spice is honored as people compare her to Princess Diana. In a new interview, the “Munch (Feeling U)” raptress reveals that she initially didn’t understand early comparisons fans made of her to the late British princess.
“I saw all of my supporters being like, ‘She’s the People’s Princess! She’s Princess Diana!’ ” the 23-year-old told Billboard. “At first, I was confused. I was like, ‘Um, Princess Diana? Out of everybody?’ But [then] I was like, ‘F**k it, she’s iconic.’ ”
In the interview, Ice also talked about experiencing some scary situations during her various appearances, like Princess Diana did. During New York Fashion Week in February, she was forced to leave in the middle of her performance after fans rushed her over their excitement.
“I’m not going to lie: I was scared at that moment. I was kind of worried because we was a little outnumbered that night,” she confessed. “But looking back, I was like, ‘This is really a blessing being able to just see how excited people are to see me perform.’ ”
Fully embracing the Princess Diana analogy, the “Boy’s Liar Pt. 2” hitmaker referenced the meme in her aptly titled single “Princess Diana”, which is from her debut EP “Like..?”. On the song, the “On Ha Mood” femcee raps, “Nowadays, I be duckin’ them cameras/ And they hype that I’m up on them banners/ Callin’ my phone, but they know I don’t answer (Why?)/ In the hood I’m like Princess Diana.”
The track, which spawned a remix with Nicki Minaj, became a hit as it debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. It additionally topped Hot Rap Songs, becoming the first No. 1 to feature two women since the chart launched 34 years ago.
Showing gratitude to the Trinidadian femcee, the Bronx native wrote on Twitter back in April, “So proud of ‘princess diana’ with nicki like my dream collab rlly came true i can d!e happy now.”
