Over five hundred residents in five communities in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region have been displaced by a severe rainstorm.

The affected residents include more than 200 hundred school children who are currently being taught under trees. Some healthcare workers have resorted to working beneath trees as well. The rainstorm which affected the EP primary school block also ripped off and collapsed several buildings in the affected communities. The communities affected are Podoe, Agorhor, Tsikpe, Tsibukope and Kpomkpo.

The affected school was built through community and government in 1962. No major rehabilitation has been conducted on the school since its inception. Two children have died. The cattle market at Agorhor was also impacted.

The headmaster of the school, Augustine Kpewu, described the disaster as devastating and called for support from stakeholders to get a different classroom for the school children.

The assemblyman for the area Richard Courage Amansunu said the disaster is the first of its kind in several decades, adding that the damage caused to the residents and the affected communities is not only extensive but also difficult to bear.

The National Disaster Management Organization boss, Mark Anthony Tordzroh said his outfit is liaising with Ho and Accra to get some relief support for victims.

The DCE for North Tongu, Richard Collins Arku, described the disaster as natural havoc and assured the residents of the affected communities of government support. According to Mr Arku, the assembly will immediately reroof the school building in order to continue to provide an environment for the children to study.

Mr Arku also appealed to NGOs, individuals and cooperate bodies to support the assembly to cushion the hundreds of victims affected by the disaster.
