Helen Huang’s surety confesses behind bars; claims to know where she is

The journalist who stood surety for the Chinese woman alleged to have been involved in illegal rosewood logging, Mohammed Bundrigbum, has confessed he knows the whereabouts of Helen Huang, who is currently on the run after jumping bail.

Mr Bundrigbum was put in police custody after he failed to produce Ms Helen after she had breached her bail conditions.

The Tamale Circuit court Monday presided over by Justice Twumasi Appiah declined to grant him bail after he failed to meet the conditions of two government workers who earn Gh¢ 3,000 each or landed property worth about GH¢ 130,000.

Even though Mr. Bundirigbum prayed the court to give him 30 days to produce the suspect, the presiding Judge denied his request.

“I won’t give you even a day to look for her. If you get people to stand surety for you, you can then go and look for her so that if you don’t come back, we can hold those people too,” he said.

Mr. Bundirigbum had not been able to meet his bail condition when the news team visited him at the Sakasaka Police station in Tamale Tuesday morning.

He indicated he called five people on Monday to bail him but they all could not meet the surety of earning 3,000 cedis a month.

He was however sure of getting Helena Huang when he gets bail. He mentioned he has information that can lead to where Helena Huang is.

The journalist said he regrets involving himself in Helena Huang’s case but expressed optimism he will get Helena Huang to the police at all cost.

The court is expected to hear the case on May 22, 2019.
