First phase of inner city household toilets project completed

Fifty-two (52) biodigester toilets have been constructed in Bukom, Mudor, Sempe, Adedenkpo, James Town and Salaga Market areas in the Greater Accra Region.

The project which is aimed at ending open defecation and improving sanitary conditions in Inner Cities across the country is spearheaded by the Ministry of Inner City and Zongo Development in collaboration with Ga Mashie Development Agency (GAMADA) and the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA).

One thousand, three hundred (1300) households benefited from the first phase of the project which was launched in April 2019, the second phase will commence in July 2019.

Mr. Stephen Luke Dapaah, the Deputy Director of Projects, Programmes, Budget, Monitoring and Evaluation (PPBME) at the Ministry and Director of Communications Seibik Bugri together with officials of GAMADA paid a working visit to the areas.

Mr Stephen Luke Dapaah during the tour said the first phase of the construction of the toilet facilities is expected to cater to fifty-two compound households in the Ga Mashie area of Accra.

According to him, the toilet facilities have the capacity to serve close to about twenty individual members of each household in the Ga Mashie.

He said the first phase of the project is further expected to be launched at the GAMADA yard along the beach road area of Accra on Wednesday, April 10, 2019.

He said the project, if successful in Ga Mashie will be replicated by the Ministry in all the inner-city areas of the country to bring reprieve to the various households in these underprivileged areas of the economy that have no household toilets.

He stressed that the construction of the household toilets for the inner-city dwellers is one of the projects on the heart of the sector Minister, Dr Mustapha Abdul-Hamid.

He noted that it is the hope of the Minister that the project will reach out to many of the inner-city dwellers to help avert the perennial issues of Cholera outbreaks in the inner-city areas.

He added that the partners are keen on successfully rolling out the first phase of the project for the second phase to meet the sanitation needs of the majority of the people in these underprivileged areas of the country.

According to him, the project envisaged that the intervention and support for the GAMADA will go a long way to improve the living conditions in the Ga Mashie to enhance local economic development.

He explained that there is more to be done in the areas of housing, improvement in the environmental sanitation, development of new public space, education and creation of job opportunities for the teeming unemployed youth in these communities adding that the construction of the household toilets is a step in helping to ameliorate the plight of people in these areas.
