Drake has made an indirect appearance in the new Netflix movie You People, starring Jonah Hill and Lauren London, thanks to a line playing on his reputation.
In a new trailer for the film released on Thursday (January 5), Hill and comedian Sam Jay are seen discussing Hill’s character Ezra’s love life ahead of his chance encounter with Amira, played by London.
“I don’t think I’ve heard of a man ever who wanted to be in a relationship so badly besides Drake. And I’m talking Views Drake,” Sam Jay quips after hearing Ezra lament that he may never find love.
The trailer then cuts to scenes of the character going through the motions of life, as Jonah Hill is heard picking up where the joke left off, with a reference to Drizzy’s Views album cover. “I feel like Views Drake,” he says, “alone, on a building, dangling my legs off wondering what it’s like to feel companionship.”
The second tailer for the Kenya Barris-directed film — due out on January 27 — offers fans an expanded look at the new movie, which centers around the comedy that ensues as Amina and Ezra get to know each other’s family: her conservative Muslim parents, and his “progressive, semi-woke” Jewish parents, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus and David Duchovny.
The latest montage of clips includes a look at the moment when the two main characters meet during a rideshare mixup, as well as a few scenes of the blossoming relationship that leads Ezra to realize he wants to marry Amina.
The trailer features appearances from La La Anthony, Deon Cole, Mike Epps, and Yung Miami, marking her second acting role.
The new You People snippet also gives fans an alternate glance at Ezra’s encounter with his soon to be in-laws, played by Nia Long and Eddie Murphy, which was filmed at Roscoe’s Chicken & Waffles. The movie happens to spotlight a number of Los Angeles landmarks, which Lauren London said was one of her favorite parts about filming in her hometown.
“My favorite location was Simply Wholesome,” she told Netflix platform Tudum. “Growing up in LA, I used to walk to Simply Wholesome and grab a patty or a smoothie. Being inside a Black establishment that promotes wellness and health in the heart of our community, and that business being highlighted and shown in a big-budget film, that was very special.”
In addition to starring in You People, Jonah Hill co-wrote the script with Barris. The Black-ish creator, who has an overall deal with Netflix, most recently worked with Kid Cudi to deliver another original for the streaming platform, the animated series Entergalactic.
Kenya Barris is currently working with Fat Joe and screenwriter Jorge A. Reyes on a new show at Showtime and BET Studios called The Book of Jose.
