General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has advised the Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson, Mrs Jean Adukwei Mensa not to allow her emotions to override her in the discharge of her duties.
Johnson Asiedu Nketia’s comment comes after Mrs Mensa on Wednesday met former President John Mahama to discuss election related issues.
Mr Nketia opined that the EC chairperson ought to take a cue from people ‘well versed’ in election related matters and not be selfish.
“We are all serving in the interest of our dear country and so as an EC chair who is involved in elections, it is important that she seeks advice from people who are well versed in election related issues.
“You can never be independent and it’s important that she listens to even the ordinary people and not use her emotions to work,” he noted on Accra based Okay FM, monitored by Adomonline.com.
Leading figures of the NDC, including Chairman Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo and the General Secretary, also participated in the discussions which centered on a wide range of issues.
The meeting was also attended by a Deputy Commissioner, Dr Eric Bossman Asare and member of the Commission, Adwoa Asuma Abrefi.
According to General Mosquito, as he is affectionately called, contrary to views that the NDC dislikes the EC chairperson their concern as a party, especially during meetings with the EC is mainly about her action which according to him, is an exhibition of her lack of understanding of the electoral system in the country.
The EC has come under heavy criticisms following a decision to hold the Limited Voters Registration exercise in only the district offices of the Commission against calls by the NDC to include all electoral areas so not to disenfranchise new voters.
