Doja Cat Named Songwriter Of The Year Despite ‘Mediocre Pop’ Admission

Doja Cat might have said she wasn’t a fan of her last projects, which she called “mediocre pop,” but that hasn’t stopped the accolades from rolling in.

On Tuesday (May 9), Doja Cat was named Songwriter Of The Year at the 2023 Broadcast Music Inc. (BMI) Awards, adding yet another achievement to her resume.

She was recognized for co-writing six of her biggest hits from 2022, including: “Get Into It (Yuh)” (co-written with SULLY and Y2K), “I Like You (A Happier Song)” (co-written with Jasper Harris), “Need to Know,” “Vegas” (co-written with Rogét Chahayed and Yeti Beats), “Woman” (co-written with Aaron Horn (PRS), Linden Jay (PRS), Jidenna and Yeti Beats) and “You Right.”

The night’s other award winners included Khalid, Justin Bieber, The Kid LAROI, among others.

Doja Cat’s recent accomplishment comes at an interesting time in her career. Recently, she made a startling admission about her discography, admitting that some of her albums were “cash grabs.”

Taking to Twitter earlier this week, the singer/rapper told her followers that her last two albums, 2021’s Planet Her and 2019’s Hot Pink, were “mediocre pop” records made purely for profit — and fans “fell for it.”

“Planet Her and Hot Pink were cash-grabs and yall fell for it,” she wrote. “now i can go disappear somewhere and touch grass with my loved ones on an island while yall weep for mediocre pop.”

Noticeably, Doja Cat didn’t include her debut album Amala in the tweet.

Shortly after, she announced that her upcoming album is titled First of All and not Hellmouth — which is what many fans assumed to be the name. “its not called hEllMoUth either its called First of All,” she wrote in another tweet. “and yes I’m announcing the album title right now.”

Doja Cat also took to Instagram Live on Tuesday to play a snippet of new music, which finds her dipping back into her rap bag.
