‘Disney hated him right out of the gate’: Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow Portrayal Reportedly Made Disney Execs Think He Was Gay
Johnny Depp has been making headlines ever since his divorce trial with his wife Amber Heard. Both parties didn’t hold back while suing and counter-suing each other and a lot of secrets were spilled during the trial which shocked the entire world. The court in the end decided to support Depp’s claim. Though at the beginning of the trial when the Aquaman actress accused the Cry-Baby star of domestic violence, Disney immediately cut off their connections with Depp, to separate and save themselves from the controversy.
The Pirates of the Caribbean film series was hugely successful at the box office. All five installments of films between 2003 to 2017 were loved by fans across the globe. Depp’s portrayal of Jack Sparrow won over many hearts, making them shower their love on the film series. But ever since the controversial defamation case between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard started, the Dark Shadows star was isolated by the film industry. Depp lost his major role in hit and promising series such as Pirates of the Caribbean and Fantastic Beasts, casting a shadow over Depp’s future career.
The reports claim that after the trial the makers of the Pirates of the Caribbean approached Johnny Depp to come back as Jack Sparrow. Yet this time it was Depp who refused to work with them questioning their loyalty. The internet was enraged as Amber Heard didn’t lose her role in Aquaman yet the innocent in the case, as judged by the court, was the only one losing his role, putting Depp’s career in turmoil.
Johnny Depp Revealed that Disney Hated Him for his Jack Sparrow Interpretation
Depp revealed in an interview how the makers hated his controversial interpretation of Jack Sparrow and called him out for ruining the entire movie. The makers could not process and understand Depp’s performance and questioned if he was drunk, mentally retarded, or even gay.
“They couldn’t stand him. They just couldn’t stand him. I think it was Michael Eisner, the head of Disney at the time, who was quoted as saying, ‘He’s ruining the movie.’ Upper-echelon Disney-ites, going, What’s wrong with him? Is he, you know, like some kind of weird simpleton? Is he drunk? By the way, is he gay?… And so I actually told this woman who was the Disney-ite… ‘But didn’t you know that all my characters are gay?’ Which really made her nervous.”
The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise may not have enjoyed the huge success and popularity it experiences today if the makers had decided to remove Depp as Captain Sparrow in the beginning. Fans loved Depp’s interpretation of Jack Sparrow and found no problem with it. Though Depp saved the film series in the past, it looks like the future of the Pirates of the Caribbean looks quite cloudy now. The sixth installment of the film series is still unclear on who will carry forth the story in Depp’s absence.
