Chris Rock Catches Flak After Joking About Will Smith Getting ‘Whipped’
Chris Rock hoping to gain more sympathy with his upcoming Netflix special may not be working. The actor/comedian has been dragged online after making fun of Will Smith, who slapped him onstage at the 2022 Academy Awards, yet again ahead of the premiere of “Chris Rock: Selective Outrage”.
According to the New York Post, the “Saturday Night Live” alum recently joked about how he’s hate-watching his former friend’s latest movie, in which the Oscar-winning actor plays a tortured, escaped slave.
“I rooted for Will Smith my whole life,” he told a packed theater, as quoted by the outlet. The 58-year-old comic added, “The other day, I watched ‘Emancipation’ just so I could watch him getting whipped.”
Chris has since divided people with his latest joke as one Twitter user said, “This kinda stuff is why I will never side with Chris Rock because why are you being weird.” Another critic noted, “chris rock made fun of a black woman on national TV, became a victim after getting what he deserved, and now spends his free time deriving pleasure from seeing a black man be whipped as a slave. Lol.”
“OK, I get that he might be personally angry about the slap (to which I can’t really blame him for) but the dude didn’t have to make a sick joke like this. Chris Rock needs to let go of this petty grudge against Will because it’s clearly intoxicating him,” a third person advised, as someone else tweeted with the hashtag “EverybodyHatesChris forreal.”
Some people, however, came to Chris’ defense, with one saying, “It was a joke! There will be many more too and good for Chris Rock. As long as they are funny keep them coming! Lol I think the joke was funny and what’s funnier is that movie sucked so that didn’t help Smith but who cares about him. Lol.”
Another clapped back at the critics who tried to silence Chris, “I have so much empathy for Will Smith. I really do. But it’s ridiculous to act as if Chris Rock is wrong for using his art to talk about what happened to him.” The person continued, “I doubt that Chris Rock’s special is JUST about Will Smith. But it’s insane that a man got slapped on national tv and you all think he should just… shut up about it. He’s a comedian using his real life experience in his art. Like comedians always do.”

Chris is said to address Will’s Oscars slap in “Chris Rock: Selective Outrage”, which will stream live on Netflix on Saturday, March 4 at 10 P.M. ET from the Hippodrome Theatre in Baltimore. An insider recently told Page Six, “The comedian is waiting to spill his humorous take on it on his live Netflix stand-up special.”
