‘Awards don’t define an artiste’ – KIDI

Dennis Nana Dwamena, known by performing name KIDI, says the ultimate goal of an artiste should not be centered on the winning of awards.

The artiste, in an interview on Accra based UTV and monitored by ABC News Ghana explained that though it’s good to be appreciated for your hardwork as a musician, awards should not necessarily define who you are in the profession.

”..Like I always say, awards don’t define an artiste. It’s just nice that when you work, you are appreciated and that makes you know people are seeing the strive you are making but if doesn’t come, it should not derail you from your purpose. You have to still remain focus and get higher, make a lot of money from the things you love doing and make people happy. That’s the ultimate goal,” he said.

His comment coincides with the just ended VGMAs which saw some rather surprising outcomes. Dancehall act, Shatta Wale, for instance, won best highlife song of the year with his hit track, ‘Level’ when he came up against artists such as Kidi, Kuami Eugene, King Promise, Kumi Guitar, Kwesi Arthur, Adina and Dada Hafco.

“When it comes to awards, it is the listeners who give awards, the public and the board vote for award so if for a category, the public and the award board think person A has done a lot to win the award, that’s fine. If people also think I’ve done enough to deserve an award, that’s also fine,” he said.

The Highlife and Afrobeat singer won male vocalist of the year despite being nominated for three other categories at the just ended Vodafone Ghana Music Awards ceremony.
